Say No to Mr. No: Justin Amash
Justin Amash earned the nickname “Mr. No” while he was a state representative in Michigan for voting against every worthwhile and necessary bill that he could trash.
Now he is a Representative in Congress from Michigan has been given the nickname “Mr. Facebook” because he actually reads every bill that he votes on and then explains his votes on his Facebook page.
Somehow he also finds the time to read Hayek and Bastiat and professes his love for them every chance he gets. Unlike Paul Ryan, he seems to mean it, too.
So far so terrible, but at least he isn’t a huge disciple of the Murray Rothbard like Ron Paul.
But that’s about as close to a compliment that Amash is going to get from me.
Here are just a few strikes against Justin Amash:
- Introduced his own bill calling for withdrawal from Afghanistan
- Sponsored legislation to halt U.S. air strikes against Libya
- Voted against extending three provisions of the Patriot Act
- Introduced proposals to block body-scanning machines in airports
- Refuses to endorse the capitalist genius businessman Mitt Romney for president
- And finally, in his own words:
I have led the fight against big-government initiatives like the Patriot Act, SOPA, CISPA, and the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for FY 2012. The 2012 NDAA allows the President to indefinitely detain anyone on U.S. soil, including American citizens, without charge or trial on the mere accusation that they are “associated” with terrorists. Dystopian, police-state laws like the NDAA run contrary to everything our country stands for.
WOW! Is this guy a disaster or what? He basically wants our country to be taken over by terrorists and is saying so explicitly.
Is it any wonder that Ron Paul is buddies with him?
Fortunately, Ron Paul is about all he’s got though – you won’t see other congressman supporting his antics. According to Roll Call:
“The Amash amendment sacrifices our national security in order to coddle foreign enemy combatants … never in our nation’s history have we granted enemy combatants who attack our homeland during a time of war the same rights and privileges of American citizens, but that’s exactly what the Amash amendment would do,” Rooney said in a statement.
Coddling indeed. If you still don’t know why NDAA is crucial to our safety, wise up.
The good news is that his main challenger, Democrat Steve Pestka, is likely to catch him by election day according to Michigan local media company M Live:
GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Democrat Steve Pestka appears to be closing in on U.S. Rep. Justin Amash and the race could be a dead heat by the Nov. 6 general election, according to a Pestka pollster.
A recent survey of 501 Third Congressional District voters shows Amash beating Pestka 50-42 percent, but the eight-point margin has shrunk from 11 points in February…
The poll, conducted Aug. 18 to Aug. 21, carries a 4.4 percent margin of error…
So as you can see, Pestka has closed the gap by 3 percent over the 6 month period from February to August when this poll was conducted. Therefore, he is likely to close the remaining 8 percent deficit he faces over the much shorter remaining time. Slam dunk.
So feel free to chalk this one up in the win column for the establishment. One less kook to worry about in the future.
